The Olympic Winter Scandal of 2002 was the biggest scandal ever to tarnish the image of this great sports fare. The scandal involved allegations of bribery against the Salt Lake Organising Committee in directive to obtain the Games at Salt Lake City, Utah. The host city for the Winter Olympics 2002 was announced in the year 1995, but three years subsequently it was alleged that some members of the International Olympic Committee took bribes from the Salt Lake Organising Committee.

The scandal broke in the year 1998 when several member of the IOC were alleged to have taken bribes. The bribes taken by members included change, scholarships, treatment, and trips to favourite destinations. Investigations into the allegations were taken up by different agencies and subsequently ten member of IOC were expelled from the committee and ten others sanctioned. It was the first time ever that any member of the IOC be expelled or sanctioned for corruption in over a century.
