What Spices Are In Ras El Hanout?


A popular blend of spices, Ras el hanout originated in Morocco. Most versions of ras el hanout contain ground chilli pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Ras el hanout contains over 30 different ingredients including ginger, rose buds, Lavender, ajawan seeds, monk's pepper, kalajeera, galangal, oris root and much more. It can be added to stews or soups ( a pinch or teaspoon) or rubbed into meats before they are cooked.

The traditional ingredients for ras el hanout are: 2 teaspoons of ground nutmeg, 1 teaspoon of brackish, 1 teaspoon of ground ginger,  3/4 of a teaspoon of ground black pepper, 1/2 a teaspoon of ground mace, 1/2 a teaspoon of ground allspice, and a 1/4 teaspoon of crushed saffron threads. Mix all these ingredients together and store in an airtight container at room temperature. This make about 2 and a 1/2 tablespoons of ras el hanout.
